HRCCU Takes Part in National Read Across America Day!

On Monday, March 2nd HRCCU Branch Manager Jess Schul joined Troy School 18’s 1st grade after school program for an afternoon of reading cute and educational stories. Jess read the story Dragons Love Tacos to the kids and loved every minute of it.

A quick description of the book below:

“Dragons love tacos. They love chicken tacos, beef tacos, great big tacos, and teeny tiny tacos. So if you want to lure a bunch of dragons to your party, you should definitely serve tacos. Buckets and buckets of tacos. Unfortunately, where there are tacos, there is also salsa. And if a dragon accidentally eats spicy salsa . . . oh, boy. You’re in red-hot trouble.”

The month of March is Read Across America Month and in conjunction with Togetherhood: Read Across America and the National Education Association organizations like HRCCU and the local YMCAs are promoting the benefits of reading at any age but especially the impact reading has on young minds.

Here is a snippet from National Today:

“March 2 is National Read Across America Day, a day to celebrate our favorite activity. The day was established by the National Education Association (NEA) in 1998 to help get kids excited about reading. The day occurs each year on the birthday of beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, so a perfect way to celebrate is to don a Seussian hat and read one his famous tales, like One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. On National Read Across America Day, students, teachers, parents, and community members around the nation come together to read books and celebrate the joy of reading — join us!” https://nationaltoday.com/national-read-across-america-day/

“Reading to your kids may help keep them from throwing fits,” writes Jenny Merkin (Psychology Today; February, 2011). “In a study, researchers measured toddlers’ spoken vocabulary and self-regulation, or ability to control behavior and emotions. They found that vocabulary at 24 months serves as a very strong predictor of self-regulation at the three-year mark, especially for boys […] Researchers…suspect that when kids can voice their thoughts, they take charge of their situation instead of growing frustrated. Kids may use words as mental tools to figure things out or to calm themselves down.”

HRCCU is committed to making life better for our communities. Education is a key part of facilitating of that positive development in our communities. We hope to institute more initiatives like this between HRCCU and the YMCA. A big thank you to Jess for representing these ideals and doing great work in our communities.
