Using a mobile checking deposit feature can save a lot of time. In the past, depositing a check meant traveling to the bank and waiting in line to see a cashier, but now mobile deposit offers a quick and easy way to add money to a banking account from anywhere.

All you need is a smartphone and a compatible banking app, such as the HRCCU Mobile Banking app.

However, for those new to this process, figuring out how to use mobile deposit can seem a bit confusing at first. That’s why we put together this mobile deposit guide to give customers an overview of the mobile deposit process as well as answer some frequently asked questions about how mobile deposit works at HRCCU.

Mobile Deposit Guide: The Basics

Mobile deposit, also known as remote deposit capture, is a type of service that allows users to deposit checks into their accounts by sending a photo of each check to the bank. To do this, customers log into their mobile banking apps and use the cameras on their smartphones or tablets to create scanned copies of the checks. Then, they send the photos, along with some additional deposit information, to their bank via the app’s secure server.

Once customers upload checks through the mobile deposit app, their bank processes the check information in the same way it would if they deposited physical checks at a bank branch. The customer’s account balance is updated based on the bank’s deposit rules. The process is quite simple and usually takes only a few minutes to complete.

HRCCU Mobile Deposit FAQs

Once customers learn how to deposit checks using a phone or tablet, they often never look back.

However, for first-time mobile deposit users, lingering questions may prevent them from trying out this convenient service. To help ease this process, these frequently asked questions may help customers fully understand mobile deposits:

How Long Do Mobile Deposits Take to Clear?

A portion of mobile deposits is put on a local hold, which is two business days. If the funds are deposited into a checking account, customers have access to $225 the first day; however, the remainder of the check amount remains on hold for the full two business days.

Can I Use Mobile Deposits to Cash a Check Made to “Cash”?

Any personal check under $200 can be cashed through the app, regardless of whether it is made out to the customer or “cash.” If the check is more than $200, the same rules regarding the two-day local hold are applied.

What Should I Do with Checks After Mobile Deposit?

We recommend keeping the check for 30 days to ensure that if it gets rejected for some reason or there is another issue, customers can still take the physical copy to a local branch to deposit it. This also allows customers the opportunity to take the mobile deposit photo again in the event there is an error with the transmission. Following the 30-day period, the best practice is to shred the check.

What Should I Do If Mobile Deposit Isn’t Working?

If mobile banking is not working, we always recommend calling us at 518-886-3400 to figure out if there is a system error or a problem with the account. You can also stop by your local branch. The mobile banking system may not be working for a few common reasons. For example, there could be a restriction on the account, or users might be typing something in incorrectly.
